What is Yerba Maté?

Yerba mate is a species of the holly genus (Ilex), with the botanical name Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.,named by the French botanist Auguste François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire.

Yerba mate is used to make the beverage known as mate in both Spanish and Portuguese. The drink is called other names in Portuguese, such as chimarrão, and tererê/tereré. It is traditionally consumed in central and southern regions of South America, primarily in Paraguay, as well as in Argentina, Uruguay, southern and central-western Brazil, the Chaco region of Bolivia and southern Chile.  It is also very popular among the Druze community in Syria and Lebanon, where it is imported from Argentina.  Yerba mate was first cultivated and used by the Guaraní people and in some Tupí communities in southern Brazil, prior to European colonization. Yerba mate can also be found in various energy drinks on the market today.

Yerba mate translates to “mate herb”, where mate is originally from the Quechua mati, a word that means “container for a drink”, “infusion of an herb”, as well as “gourd”.

How is Oregon Yerba Maté Different?

Quality makes us completely different from the other brands. We are the only yerba maté company to use both green and aged (never smoked) yerba maté as the base for all our blends offering the best in both taste and nutrition. We then add organic or wild crafted herbs and spices to create our great tasting line of healthy yerba maté blends.

What is the best way to make Yerba Maté?

There are three great ways to make Yerba Maté.

  1. French Press Method. Use approximately 1/2 cup of Yerba Mate for 32 oz Fresh Press. Fill with hot water (185 degrees), not boiling. Let steep for one minute and press.
  2. Coffee Pot Method.  Just replace your coffee portion with Oregon Yerba Mate in any coffee maker. For best results, Mate should be dark enough so you cannot see through it.
  3. Traditional Method. Fill gourd halfway with Yerba Mate. Fill with hot water (185 degrees) until Mate is saturated. Sip and refill up to 10 times.

Why is Yerba Maté called a ``caffeine alternative``?

Yerba Mate Tea contains 85 mg. of caffeine in every cup of 8-ounce tea which is relatively lesser as compared to coffee and chocolate drinks thus you’re taking more tea than caffeine. It provides a balanced, smooth and calm boost in energy that keeps you awake and alert all day without the negative effects of coffee such as sleep disturbance and caffeine jitter. It is also a great supplement for people with chronic fatigue syndrome.
